ESA SNAP (Sentinel Application Platform) is an Earth observation toolbox and development platform published by the European Space Agency, currently available in version 14.0.0, with two versions on record. It belongs to the geospatial and scientific data processing category, serving researchers, analysts, and developers who work with satellite imagery, particularly data from the Sentinel missions. The platform is jointly developed by Brockmann Consult, SkyWatch, and C-S under a common architecture shared by all Sentinel Toolboxes, and its design is well suited to Earth observation processing and analysis thanks to technological innovations including extensibility, portability, a modular rich client platform, generic EO data abstraction, tiled memory management, and a Graph Processing Framework. Among its feature highlights, SNAP provides very fast image display and navigation even of giga-pixel images, while the Graph Processing Framework enables users to create custom processing chains for automated workflows. Advanced layer management supports adding and manipulating new overlays such as images of other bands, content from WMS servers, and ESRI shapefiles, complemented by rich region-of-interest definitions for statistics and various plots, as well as easy bitmask definition and overlay. The software also offers flexible band arithmetic using arbitrary mathematical expressions, accurate reprojection and ortho-rectification to common map projections, and geo-coding and rectification using ground control points. Practical workflow support includes automatic SRTM DEM download and tile selection, a product library for scanning and cataloguing large archives efficiently, and multithreading with multi-core processor support for performance on demanding datasets. Integrated WorldWind visualisation rounds out the toolkit, allowing interactive three-dimensional exploration of results. Typical use cases range from routine image inspection, statistical analysis, and map projection work to building repeatable, large-scale processing pipelines for Earth observation archives.
